Bonfire Nights

In a few small villages in Sussex there is a tradition to celebrate Guy Fawkes Night. Each village has a Society who holds a Bonfire Night around the 5th November and each Society has it's own dress code along with the traditional striped tops of the smugglers. The Season's celebrations culminate with five Societies with in Lewes all celebrating on 5th November.

I have marched with the Newick Bonfire Society for a few years now and here are some of my photographs. The costumes, torchlight, smells and celebrations all come together every Saturday from October to the middle of November.
