Michael Newton     18th August 1944 -27th May 2017

YPU Judge and Lecturer, Michael Newton has died at the age of 72, Many photographic club members in West Yorkshire and Greater Manchester will have had their work appraised by Michael over a period lasting 46 years.  His learned style combined with scientific and photographic knowledge made him a welcome visitor on the circuit. His specialism was Nature photography and his advice helped many to understand the subject matter which they photographed. In recent years he also took to lecturing using his knowledge to present an audio-visual talk on the work of the nature photographer, Thomas Beaumont jointly with his Thomas’s daughter, Mrs M Beaumont.

From his obituary in the Halifax Courier I understand something of Michael’s extraordinary breadth of interests. His career had been in teaching. Besides being a member of Hebden Bridge Camera Club, Michael contributed significantly to his community.  He was instrumental in the fight to protect Hardcastle Crags from being flooded as a reservoir, helping preserve its beauty for all to enjoy. As a member of Calder Civic Trust he used his skills with images to produce slideshows promoting the regeneration of the Hebden Royd area from the late 1960s. Enthusiasm for learning and teaching ranged from being part of a team of scientists who developed the prototype in Southampton University for what would eventually become Lego Technics. Together with his wife Joyce, Michael was a founder members of Hebden Bridge Twinning Society with links to the French twin town St Pol Sur Ternoise and German town of Warstein.  He was a lover of music, a long-standing member of Hebden Bridge Trades Club, a member of Hebden Bridge International Group, Hebden Bridge Little Theatre and Hebden Bridge Wine Circle. A keen walker, he often joined with friends in the Ossett Walking Group.
Michael was a true gentleman and will be sadly missed by his family, friends and the local and wider community.  Our thoughts are with his wife Joyce and his family whilst they come to terms with their loss.

NEWS FROM HUDDERSFIELD

A splendid outside wall hanging now advertises the YPU Exhibition. Thanks go to Tim Sawyer of Ilkley CC for the use of his image. The PAGB print entry has now been taken down for entry to the national championship on 3rd June and 45 replacement prints have been put up in their place. To the left hand side is a download listing the newly hung prints. With a quarter of the print exhibition changing, how about another visit to Huddersfield to see the revised exhibition?
